  • Prepare Materials: Measure, cut, and bend steel reinforcement bars (rebar) and mesh to precise specifications using hand and power tools (e.g., bolt cutters, guillotines, power saws, rebar benders).
  • Assemble and Position: Assemble steel reinforcement by tying, wiring, or clipping bars and mesh together to create cages and frameworks.
  • Install Reinforcement: Position and secure the assembled steel reinforcement in concrete forms, ensuring correct placement using spacers, chairs, and other supports.
  • Welding/Joining: Weld or bolt steel reinforcement pieces together as required by project specifications.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, site managers, shuttering carpenters, concrete pourers, and other construction professionals to ensure seamless project execution and adherence to schedules.
  • Quality Assurance: Inspect completed steel fixing work to ensure it complies with engineering standards, project specifications, and quality control requirements.
  • Maintain Work Area: Keep the work area clean, organized, and safe, ensuring proper storage of materials and tools.
  • Adhere to Safety: Strictly follow all health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and report any discrepancies or issues with drawings, materials, or site conditions to the supervisor.
  • Maintenance: Perform minor maintenance and repair work on steel structures and frames as needed.

  • Technical Aptitude: Strong ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Practical Skills: Proficient in using hand and power tools common in steel fixing (e.g., rebar cutters, benders, pliers, welding equipment).
  • Physical Fitness: Excellent physical stamina, strength, and dexterity to perform demanding manual labor, including heavy lifting, bending, and working in various positions for extended periods.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in measurements and placement to ensure structural integrity.
  • Safety Conscious: Thorough understanding of construction site safety procedures and a commitment to safe working practices.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues and other trades.
  • Problem-Solving: Good problem-solving skills to address challenges that may arise on-site.

  • Adaptability: Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Certifications (Preferred/Required depending on region):
    • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card (UK specific) or equivalent.
    • Relevant vocational qualification or apprenticeship in steel fixing or general construction.
    • “Work Safely at Heights” certification.
    • Basic welding certification (if welding is a core duty).

Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience with various types of steel reinforcement (mild steel, high-tensile).
  • Knowledge of different concrete types and pouring processes.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime and weekends, as project demands require.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily outdoor work on construction sites, exposed to various weather conditions.
  • May involve working at heights, in trenches, or in confined spaces.
